About the Project

Ulan Software partnered with PKO Bank Polski, the largest bank in Poland and the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region, to implement a Proof of Concept (POC) for an integrated banking marketplace solution. The core of bank's operations is in retail banking, where the bank strives to offer innovative digital services to meet the evolving needs of its extensive customer base.

Bank decided to test the feasibility of integrating a marketplace within its digital ecosystem, allowing customers to access a range of third-party services directly through the bank’s online and mobile applications.

Project Goals

The project’s objective was to design and deploy a marketplace concept that could operate seamlessly alongside bank’s existing infrastructure. The bank wanted to explore the value of a marketplace environment within its ecosystem, wether it will enchance its offerings and strengthen its digital footprint.

We aimed to:
Create a fully functional Proof of Concept within a short timeframe
Ensure seamless integration with existing banking systems and enable straightforward data flow between the marketplace, the bank, and third-party partners
Maintaine high security and compliance standards to align with banking regulations
Provide a new channel for customers to access a variety of services and products within a single, cohesive platform

What we Delivered

PWA-Based Marketplace Architecture

We constructed the marketplace on a RESTful architecture using a Progressive Web App (PWA) framework, which allowed for responsive design and ensured compatibility across all digital banking channels.

This architecture facilitated integration with bank’s systems and third-party services, ensuring smooth data exchange and  connectivity.

Leveraging microservices, we provided modular, independent functionalities for each aspect of the marketplace, which enabled rapid testing and easy scalability.

Branding Interface Design

The marketplace’s minimalist design made it adaptable for use in various banking digital channels, as well as on a standalone platform if desired.

Our approach minimized the need for additional modifications to suit different channels, enabling a unified experience for customers regardless of the device used.

The design ensured that the banks branding remained intact across all touchpoints, maintaining brand consistency and offering a seamless customer experience.

Advanced Vendor Management Panel

A crucial component of the marketplace was the vendor management panel, a back-office solution that empowered vendors to manage all aspects of their sales activities.

The panel includes common features necessary for ecommerce operations like inventory management and order tracking.

The user-centric design allows vendors to navigate complex operations with ease, reducing operational overhead and increasing vendor satisfaction.

Intelligent Search and Filtering

We developed a powerful search and filtering engine to help bank customers locate products and services quickly.

This system provides highly accurate search results based on user behavior, preferences, and filters.

The advanced filtering options allow users to refine their search based on product type, vendor, price range, and availability, among other parameters.

Checkout Process

The multivendor checkout process was designed to handle complex transactions securely, maintaining bank's high standards for data protection.

Built with secure APIs and AWS infrastructure, the checkout system automatically divides purchases by vendor, adjusts shipping parameters, and provides options for customization, such as different delivery addresses and messages to couriers.

This flexibility enables a seamless purchasing experience, even when multiple vendors are involved. The checkout process also supports multiple payment methods, enhancing convenience for bank’s diverse user base.

Project Results

The successful implementation of the Proof of Concept demonstrated the feasibility and value of integrating a marketplace within PKO BP’s banking ecosystem. Key achievents included:

  • Expanded Digital Service Offering by providing a new channel for bank customers.
  • Accelerated Time-to-Market with the marketplace POC delivered in just two months.
  • Reduced Development Costs due to the use of a microservices-based, RESTful architecture, which streamlined the POC development and allowed for modular testing and deployment without extensive rework.
  • Customer centric Experience with a streamlined, user-friendly interface that allows easy navigation, efficient search and filtering, and a smooth multivendor checkout process.

The successful completion of this POC laid the foundation for a potential full-scale rollout, showcasing the potential for Bank to transform its digital service offerings with an integrated marketplace. This project not only demonstrated the feasibility of marketplace but also highlighted Ulan Software’s ability to deliver high-quality, secure, and scalable platforms within the financial services sector.
